The Tax Expenditures Lab is thrilled to announce the release of version 1.3.0 of the Global Tax Expenditures Database (GTED). What is new? Flurim Aliu, CEP Fellow and one of the GTED project leaders explains what is new to this version:
Methodology Enhancements
1. Start and End Dates: We’ve included special fields for the start and end dates of each provision, capturing more precise data (whenever available).
2. Policy Objective Inference: We now infer some policy objectives from the names and descriptions of provisions, in addition to those explicitly stated in reports. A new field, “Specific or General POB,” differentiates between explicitly stated and implicitly included policy objectives.
3. “Last Appeared” Field: This new field captures the last report in which a provision appeared, helping track data that is reported intermittently.
4. Revenue Forgone Projections: We’ve added projections of revenue forgone whenever available, specifying which figures are projections. This information is available in the downloadable files, while the website continues to display data up to 2022 only.
Data Expansion
1. New Countries: Welcome Bangladesh, Chad, Cyprus, and Ghana! This brings our total to 109 countries, covering exactly 50% of all jurisdictions listed by the World Bank.
2. Updated Data: We’ve updated data for 25 countries, adding revenue forgone data for 96 more years collectively.
Website Updates
- Keyword search for individual provisions and the possibility to download all relevant data with ease will be available soon.
These improvements will enhance the usability and scope of the GTED. The GTED is updated continuously, and we will be updating the remaining countries in the database with new data and the new structure in the coming months.
